Just at the moment the price of our petrol is dropping at an amazing rate - for the last week or so almost every time we have passed the petrol station just around the corner the price has been down from what we saw the last time.

At under one pound and ten pence per litre - 35 fluid ounces - it makes a significant difference to the cost to fill the tank on our car.

If anyone was considering hiring a car here in Britain, there would be a real difference to the cost of the fuel.

On the folk music forum I am on I have tried to warn people of the cost of fuel when they are thinking of driving several hundred miles every day to visit a different folk club every evening, and on one of the machine knitting lists there were wails from someone caught out by their assumption that a litre and a US gallon were about the same volume, and that they would be driving along free flowing highways and not stuck in traffic.

Anne, how does 86 cents (Canadian) per litre sound to you? It's just around the corner from me.

$2.58 USD per gallon in the town I work. Some places in the states are under $2 USD/gallon. Oil is under $50 USD/barrel, and some folks say the states are going to be an oil exporter in the next decade! Sheeesh!

I am immune to the smugness of people with low fuel prices - ha! - and we have cars which do 40 miles to the gallon rather than maybe 25 too.

Commentators were pointing out that although the price of the raw material is falling due to no increase in demand but increased output, in the UK the price of petrol and diesel is distorted by the amount of tax paid on it, so although it might drop below one pound per litre, it is at the expense of the oil companies which are already struggling on the amount of money they are taking in.

The oil industry in Scotland, which was thriving is going into a decline - perhaps something to take into account when touring.

My commuter (Ford Fiesta) gets an overall long term ave of 37.7mpg. I have a Ford pickup that gets 15mpg but doesn't get used much. We pay about $1USD/gal in federal taxes, really not much compared to other countries. Part of the drop in oil price is the drop in demand in the states. Wages are still pretty stagnant, so you use less gas anyway you can. Years ago I drove my truck all the time. No more!

Awesome thread. I was looking for something like this as I am planning a cruise to Scotland for my wife and I's 20th wedding anniversary. Though we have 5 years to save up, this helps me out.

My wife and I are heading back this year to visit my daughter and son-in-law. The wife went last year in the peak season while I was recovering from back surgery.

We are looking at July or September. We have a penthouse available to us in Edinburgh so that will be a big savings.
We have noticed a savings in airfare and lodging when we go north to tour.

I am hearing talk about a side trip to Copenhagen. Apparently air fare is pretty cheap from Edinburgh.

I'm a home health nurse and I drive quite a bit for my job. the drop in gas prices is kind of a boon for me. I started riding a scooter to save on gas. the scooter I ride gets about 90 miles to the gallon. now with gas less then $2 a gallon I fill my tank for less than $5.
