The weathermen tell us the temperature is around freezing point though it feels much colder with the chill factor of the wind. I've not been kilted much as I've been driving the school bus most days and wearing the regulation black trousers. I did see a man in a kilt this morning in Selkirk, he was wearing it with a bicycle instructor's hi-visibility bib, and I thought he made a great ambassador for advertising the warmth of the wool kilt by cycling in a kilt during this cold weather.

Over New Year's we had a real cold snap! The high was around 50f/10c which is as cold as it ever gets.

Then a couple weeks ago it was 80f/27c which is unseasonably high, in fact our typical August/September weather.

    No worries about cold kneys!

    I just found this chart

Hey Richard, I know we need to use lots of salt around here, but do you have to rub it in?

-20F today on the way to work. I am wearing trousers but was kilted last Friday and it was not much warmer. I spend a lot of time outdoors and am rather acclimated. I would not want to be working outdoors for long periods in this weather with a kilt on, but for short periods of less than a 1/2 hour, it is not too bad for me,

Wind chill notwithstanding and assuming I would not be outside for more than a few minutes at a time, I am generally comfortable in a kilt down to about the mid-20s F. (-4-ish C)

I've had some luck keeping out the cold by taking an inexpensive, but warm pair of wool socks, cutting off the feet, stretching it out overnight to make it wider, then wearing them as a sort of upper-thigh-warmers. It doesn't help my knees per-se, those were still uncovered, but it did help keep my upper legs warm.

Agreed though, once a breeze kicks in when it's really cold, it can be eye-opening, to say the least!

    Cheers!

When I'm sitting in my home office, my knees get colder if I'm in my long quite thick cotton cycling trousers than when I'm wearing my kilt and hose and outside he same is true if I just walking around. I think the heat resulting from the warm socks and layers of kilt material compensate for the exposed knees. The same is true for any other pairs of trousers. When I was working and had to wear trousers, there was always a pair of long johns underneath for warmth in the winter months, even indoors. (We don't have our heating on high.) The long johns are not required with a kilt, even my cheap acrylic ones.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

The fellow USA midwesterners above have pretty much said it; we had wretched cold for the 2 1/2 weeks after Christmas. On a number of occasions it got to below -25 F in places, without the wind chill, -40 F or -40 C (same at that point) with.

Skin not only chaps, then, frostbite to exposed skin is a reality, in minutes.

Today it is a few degrees above 32 F / 0 C, and some folks have shorts on, most in suits are not wearing overcoats, many in sweatshirts.

Yesterday I was going into Edinburgh for lunch with a friend. A lady at the railway station asked me if I needed tartan tights. She was wearing trousers, the temperature was 1C with a 20mph wind so chill factor! I decided to be polite and explained that lots of wool kept me warm.

What about you knees she asked. I admitted that they were "cool"! I explained that I find the kilt very comfortable except in high temperatures (+25C). She was surprised. I decided not to ask her what sort of tights she wears!
