I donno about that Guardian article. After reading it I scrolled down a bit and found the Guardian's Top 10 articles about fashion list from around the web.
Went to a Burns Night dinner tonight and honestly, most people have no idea what to get so it is probably a good thing for many. For instance, one couple put together a plaid skirt for each with a belt and a scarf over the shoulder. They put it together today for the dinner. Doubt that they will ever think of wearing it ever for anything else so a real kilt, poor or not, would be better than a couple of plaid skirts.
Yes Burns Suppers bring out that sort of thing! I've piped for many years at a Burns Supper (cancelled this year however) and the organiser always wears the same thing: a wonderful 100 year old Edwardian sporran, celtic top and goat hair body, tartan full hose, a white shirt, and... wait for it... a tartan skirt. No, not a casual kilt or even a kilt skirt with flat aprons in the front and pleats in the back, but just a skirt, gathered evenly all round.

And not just them! There's a piping magazine (which shall go nameless) which has a Highland Dress 'fashion expert' who appears to be completely ignorant of the history and norms of Highland Dress.
