    St. Kilda/Gaelic Themes/Scottishtartanstore

Would someone clarify the relationship between St. Kilda (Glasgow), Gaelic Themes and Scottishtartanstore on eBay?

I bought a jacket and vest from Scottishtartanstore. They were very pleasant to do business with. When I got the package, the From address was St. Kilda, Glasgow. When I opened it, the label says Gaelic Themes.

Are these three one in the same?

Not sure about Gaelic themes but I was interested in a kilt from scottishtartanstore and they said I could see the kilt at their store in Edinburgh which was St Kilda. Unfortunately, last time I passed it looked liked the shop had closed down. Think they might have something to do with tartanweb.com though not sure.

When I ordered a kilt from this company http://nicolsonkiltmakers.com/ in the Canongate in Edinburgh it had the name St Kilda on the outside. I don't know if that name still appears there now as there is another St Kilda at 56 Newington Road Edinburgh.

Unfortunately, that's the shop cainam referred to in his post above. It was certainly closed and appeared empty when I was there last July.

Isn't "Gaelic Themes" the purveyor of the various goo-gaws to the retailers?

Tartan web st.kilda and gaelic themes are indeed all related. And Gaelic themes do indeed wholesale to other retailers.

I think they are all one in the same. My first clan kilt came from Gaelic Themes as a direct buy from their website. This was about 12-13 years ago if memory serves. The kilt is labeled St. Kilda. Gaelic themes no longer has a direct to customer site. I've always been very happy with the kilt I got from them.

A word of caution. St. Kilda is a very common name. Please do not confuse The St. Kilda Group of Companies from St. Kilda USA, St. Kilda Australia or any other.

Gaelic Themes, TartanWeb, RG Hardie Bagpipes and Gaelic Tailoring all come under the umbrella of the St. Kilda Group.

St. Kilda USA and St. Kilda Australia are separate companies with separate reputations.

The St. Kilda Islands are far west of the coast of Scoland and many companies there use the name too.

Gaelic Themes sell wholesale to kilt shops. I buy many of my products from them. But this is the difference. Gaelic Themes actually make most of the products they sell.
Some other large names you may know are simply retailers of other people's products.

The funny thing is, the "industry" is MUCH smaller than most people realize. There are a few key players on the wholesale side. I have seen kilts 'discussed' up here for how poorly they're made from company X, then in another post happening at the same time, seen kilts from company Y applauded for their quality. What members don't necessarily know is that often times, the kilts are made by the same company! I won't go into details as I wouldn't want to "shame" one company or another, but let's just leave it at "it happens more often than you think".

Yes it gets complicated, for example this

"St.Kilda Highland Dancewear is a specialist division of the Gaelic Themes group of companies which are the UK's largest highland wear and bagpipe manufacturers."

On bagpipe chat forums heated discussions sometimes happen when people try to pin down just who makes certain bagpipes (which actual turners, which actual facility). Somebody will visit a shop named X in a Glasgow Industrial Estate where bagpipes stamped Y are being made, but then the owners of Y Bagpipes will come on and deny that their bagpipes are made offsite etc. This is made more complicated because of the tendency in Scotland of pipemakers purchasing the rights to the names of deceased famous pipemakers, so that the same shop (operated by persons unknown) might make numbers of identical pipes but they will variously be stamped and sold as X, Y, and Z.

Other pipemakers are completely open, posting photos of their facilities, naming their turners, etc.
