gatling gun at the dicken's festival riverside ca.
I went to the festival today. There was a lot of fun things to do and listen to. Here was the gatling gun with the reenactor group and this was a shot I liked. _DSC0850 copya.jpgI deleted my photobucket account since people couldn't see the photos anyway. Sorry for having to hit the link as some don't like it.

I thought I recognised the kilted gent from somewhere.
I found him again in a photo which I took at the Ventura Seaside Games in 2009.
He's third in line, carrying the flag.
It really is a small world when two of us xmarkers living thousands of miles apart have photographed the same re-enactor.
Anyway the kilted gentleman is a member of Bydand Forever, who are a history team who re-enact the 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders as they would have appeared in 1882.
The relevance of the Gatling gun to the kilt is that the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders participated in the Battle of El Teb in the Sudan in 1882, along with the Royal Navy who used their Gatling guns to provide cover fire for the kilted Gordon Highlanders.

Wow! Nice pics, guys. And you're right Alex - quite a coincidence.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Since this appears to be the place to put "accessories" here are some of the rest of the group. The rest of the dicken festival are under show us your pictures. Another of the gatling gun.

They generally have more guys but maybe the Queen Mary must have thinned their ranks.

I have no idea if the Gordon Highlanders wore kilt pins in 1882, perhaps not, but I cannot help but observe that the kilt without a kilt pin does not detract from the overall effect of the kilt. In fact, better by far no kilt pin at all, than too many, too large, and too loud.

I think you meant 'third in line with the sword', the fourth man is carrying the flag (which just happens to line up with the sword.)

love the 'peeler' in the photo

Really like your comment about a telephone. My mother used to call it The Tyranny of the Telephone. You could be engaged in a life-changing discussion and the phone rings...your are supposed to stop and answer it? I think not!

A Gatling gun is not an easy "accessory" to carry, takes up a lot of room at Burns Suppers and is very difficult when SCD'ing.
