How formal?

I do have a black leather sporran and chain, but it's very plain, and more Traditional Pakistani Dress, than TCHD. Shiny black shoes -- got 'em. A fuzzy bunny sporran is what I don't have, the others, nice ones, are brown leather. And after all, if a man in a kilt is a man and a half, ought he really wear bunny? I just generally prefer browns over black. I want artificer to rebag my MOD cantel, and do new bags in prairie dog fur and bison, which is my idea of formal for a Plainsman. Wish I had one now, but it will come in time. Might check out a rental. Certainly don't want to wear the Prince Charlie with a tacky sporran. No doubt whatever I wear with the kilt will look nice, it's just that in such a public sphere I want to represent kilts wearing folks in a way that might even get a nod of approval from other kiltoids -- and that's about as close to being a total conformist as I want to get.

I've never owned a tuxedo, so when I've attended shows in Hollywood it's been the good ol' Prince Charlie, goathair sporran, tartan hose, buckled shoes... you get the idea!

One thing for sure, ain't nobody going to be dressed better than you!

Sometimes, Country Come to Town is OK. And when it is really stylish Country, it looks a lot better than cheap Town Goods. I say wear the brown and charcoal.

I have one of the "bunny" sporrans…not very convincing for formal….wore it once and figured that it was going to get retired and replaced with something a little less fluffy.

Did procure a black "bovine" sporran with a gunmetal colored cantle that didn't break the bank and looks a damn sight better than ol' peter cottontail. I would suggest looking around for an economical bovine number…looks reasonably presentable.

Attended Lyric Opera this past weekend in Chicago (did not go kilted, -20 C with vicious wind)...

...and was rather saddened at the number of adults attending an opera clad in "Chicago sloppy" of blue jeans, athletic shoes, hoodie sweatshirts and hard-worn quilted nylon short jackets.

Thank you for the tip; 'will look this year for suggested gunmetal cantle / bovine sporran. (Bunny has looked nasty to these eyes, as well.)

@James Hood, I assume you were there on Friday evening? I was there and I was kilted! But I wore a kilt jacket and vest and I did fine. Got a few nice compliments.
