If asked directly, which is rare, for men my preferred reply is :"How old were you when you started to get interested in other men's underwear?" The intention is to prevent any repetition of the question to me or anyone else. I do not recollect being asked by a female, they usually inquire about the tartan, or just say I like your kilt, as one airport gate attendant did as I was rushing for a plane recently. More on that in a different post.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

I've only been asked obliquely, i.e. whether I am dressed traditionally, and by middle aged women. My response is generally vague and uninformative, like "No, this kilt is man-made fibre", for example. Frankly, my wife is much better looking than any of these women. There again, I'm probably no prize either.

Do you know, I think a proportion of those asking "the question" are just trying to start up a simple conversation about the kilt. A poor choice of opening line, for sure, but I think basically no harm is meant--------sometimes.

My wife and I were recently out picking up some milk from the grocery store after church Sunday. A woman walks by us and says are you "wearing that kilt properly", my answer was " yes the pleats are in the back". Nothing more was said and I think the young woman cashier was a little embarrassed that someone would ask such a question.

When I was younger, I would have shown. Now that I'm on wife #2, I don't feel I need to answer. Anyone that attempts to check on their own picks up their teeth from the floor, either by me or by my wife. Being the IT guy at work and having to get under desks, I won't wear a kilt to work. I mentioned it one day, and got some interesting responses, but don't think anyone would care.
