I don't know about you, but I'm pretty fed up with Highland attire being abused "for laughs". That tired joke is well past it's prime. With everyone else crying "I'm offended" about anything and everything, we might as well get on the bandwagon. It doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon.

I may not be able to do anything about it, and I may well be the only one who cares, but I don't have to like it.

One thing I have wondered is how. How does one even remotely accidentally put a kilt on backwards? Have they never wrapped a towel around themselves after a shower? Doesn't it see natural to wrap something around you with the fabric behind you, then cross over one side to the other?

Here is what I wrote on Facebook a short time ago;
I may be wrong but I think someone was very clever in dressing these lads this way. We tend to sympathize "poor boys don't know any better but they sure can beat those drums." Where as if they were well dressed we would think something like "they're good drummers but I bet they have studied drums for years".
These boys look darn respectable compared to some of the outfits I have seen on today's teenagers. Sloppy yes but that seems to be the trend these days, but respectable none the less.

It seems obvious to us, but I've seen people who have hired kilts for weddings, and other people unfamiliar with kiltwearing, do it all the time.

Doing the math, they have a 50% chance of getting it right!

Then there's the flashes, which many people separate and have one on the outside of the leg, one on the inside. Even Sean Connery has done that. I wish hire shops would sew the two flashes together.

And lacing the ghillies all the way up the leg.

I sympathize, but it seems to me that Highland attire isn't singled out so much more often than other things.

Yes The Three Stooges wore goofy Highland Dress for laughs, but they worked everything for laughs. I've seen various comedians wear ludicrous golf outfits, safari outfits, baseball uniforms, military uniforms, and pretty much anything else.

I disagree. It would seem that the old "Men wearing skirts" series of jokes ranks rather blatantly at about the top of the ethnic dress pyramid, and has since at least the vaudeville era.

In fact go to youtube and do a search for "Hot Scots" and you will find about 20 videos very similar. It seems to be all the rage for High School talent contests lately.

My hillbilly family love that show. However, I think the writers had enough knowledge of hillbilly culture to make a humorous caricature. The jokes went both ways, too. Will Rogers once said that when Okies fled Oklahoma for California during the depression it raised the IQ of both states.

It can be somewhat disconcerting to be the "other" in a culture, but it's far easier to get by laughing at yourself while laughing at others as well. Considering how poorly boys wear pants in a society where (almost) all males wear only pants, it would be a bit extreme to expect these same boys to wear a kilt well.
