    Campbell Ancient options/thoughts

I am a big fan of DC Dalgliesh's Campbell of Inveraray. It is a great lighter and not so bold version of Campbell Ancient. That said, unless I get a number of chaps together on an order (may try it) I am likely not going to be able to have it custom woven for just myself.

I have some Campbell Ancient from House of Edgar, but it is a bit bright and bold for my liking. The images I see online from Lochcarron are more subdued and nice, but I have not seen it personally. Does anyone have any Campbell Ancient in Lochcarron Strome that they are willing to comment on? Perhaps even post a photo of a kilt they have in it?

Here is a sampling of the colors mentioned above from the weavers' websites...

I should add that although I do not want to go a bold/bright route, I also am not wanting a "weathered" tartan as I am looking for greens and blues, not the greys and browns of the weathered.

All I can add is maybe order swatches of the fabrics to compare. I did this with the Isle of Skye because the Lochcarron looks so much brighter than Marton Mills. When I received the two swatches, they look identical.

As a member of Clan Donald, perhaps they would all look better in the bottom of a bog.....just kidding. Of the ones you show, I prefer the Locharron version.
    Cheers

I was faced with a similar quandary to you when I was choosing Ancient Hunting Robertson for my kilt. I had swatches from Lochcarron, House of Edgar and Marton Mills. Both HoE and MM tartans were brighter (harsher even, to my eye) than the more subdued Lochcarron, which is the one I chose. From their website it seems that the Lochcarron blue and green of the Robertson is identical to that of the Campbell. I was delighted with my choice and would not reverse it. You can get a bit of an idea from my avatar.

Thank you. I have a swatch of the Lochcarron coming and will look from there.

No worries - but have a look here. It seems that Dalgliesh have a few yards available of Black Watch (which is, of course, Campbell) in the colour palette you're interested in.

I definitely like the Dalgliesh the best. The contrast between the colors is much more defined, which keeps the whole from having a sort of washed out look that I see in the other two.

Have you thought about Wilsons' shades? I have some 42nd tartan (aka Campbell, Sutherland, etc) in a heavy worsted by Dalgiesh. PM me if you are interested.
