You have a very talented friend, Guy. I'm sure there will be many who would love to own such a beautiful piece.

    Very nice. Well executed craftsmanship.

How does it feel in the hand? Is it well balanced, etc. etc. It looks to have a nice taper from pommel to blade tip.

Care to elaborate on the type of wood used for the handle?

Destin Scot- As you might have guessed, then handle is slender so I don't hold it like a cutting or slicing knife. Gripped somewhat like an epee, with the thumb along the top- pressing strongly on the upper end of the raised blade, it feels good, balanced and easy to imagine used in a thrusting manner. Dave did not specify the wood he used. To my amateur eye, it looks like a walnut (English?). Dave lives in TN. I can try to remember to ask him sometime.

And please post images of the companion piece when it is done. I have been thinking of crafting something like that.

Will do, Issac W. It won't be until late August or so but I will definitely let you "see" it.

Guy III - Congratulations on a great-looking piece. It very much looks like a historic sgian ochles (armpit knife). Was your piece made by Glenn McClain? I have four pieces of his (dirk, sgian ochles, dining set and a push dagger), and your sgian looks very much like his work. Does the left side of the blade have the small "M in a square" mark of Glenn's? Just curious. If your blade is a McClain, double congratulations!

If your friend Dave lives in TN, he more likely used Black Walnut for the handle. The real coop would be to get your hands on some American Chestnut. It's a good looking dirk all round.
