The Carolina tartan is the official tartan of North Carolina. Here is a handy link:

Interesting that I could not find the Carolina tartan when searching for North Carolina. After reading about it here, I was able to find it by searching for Carolina. It seems too busy for adaptation.

It would be quite simple to 'adapt' this, or any other, tartan. It's just a case of how one goes about it.

If you plan on registering your resultant tartan with the Scottish Register of Tartans, one of their criteria for acceptance of a new tartan is that it be "sufficiently different" from all other tartans. If you start with an existing design, be sure your changes are significant enough to make your variant "sufficiently different." That's a subjective term that isn't clarified anywhere on the SRT web site. Personally I wouldn't get too hung up with directly modifying an existing design from specific thread counts, when a fresh design can be "inspired by", without being "made from."

That line about being sufficiently different is an interesting one.

However my concept was to pay tribute to the roots of the organization. The one I have found that I think could be a good base, is in mostly different colors, so at the very least the colors would be different. However it lacks the historical reference that I was looking for. So this may end up being a design from scratch, which was not where I originally wanted to go with it.

It might just be simple to have a school / regimental tie instead, but when have any of use here gone with the simple route?

Although the SRT doesn't clearly define what makes a new design "sufficiently different" from an existing one, they do note that simple replacement of one color with another, in an existing design, is not "sufficiently different." Unfortunately, the SRT web site is down at the moment, but you might want to contact them to ask for clarification before investing too much time finding an existing tartan to modify, when that same time can be used to develop a new design from scratch.

Sufficiently different meaning in terms of the STR, something that will/could not be readily confused with an existing sett, of which there are over 8000. Prospective designs go to the Advisory Committee, of thich I am one, for comment and recommendation. Our comments are considered by the Keeper of the Register who has the final say.

Understanding that part of the process is helpful. Thank you.

With over 8,000, I imagine it is quite possible to accidentally be to similar to another Tartan.

That being said, after playing around with some of the tartan designing software I have found out there, it is a pretty good thing that I am not a weaver.
