Still waiting on the mailman for this one, but in the meantime....
I've found this mystery outfit also offers matching sgians for each of their 3 styles (early, 18th C, Victorian) in brown and black.
Here, for instance, is the "late 18th C" that would match the dirk I have coming. I may jump on one if I'm satisfied with the metallurgy in the dirk.
Now, forgive me, since I've never had a "real" sgian, but isn't 8" kind've huge? I like the size of my Cold Steel Secret Edge, and it's only 6.5". The handle is what looks like is oversized, and might could be disassembled and cut down by an inch or so from the bottom side...

I just bought a couple of these last month. They are nice enough to look at, but this one feels a little delicate to the touch when you hold it. The regimental style seems more substantial in your hand. They both look great in your hose though.

I don't know about "huge" but definitely on the large side. Six inches seems about standard. With much of the length being in the handle, I would think it might be a bit top heavy riding in the sock.

I bought both dirks and the matching sgian dhubs some months ago.
In general I am happy with them. They are clearly ment for wear or display only since the blades are semi-sharp, and when I (gently) tried to sharpen them I quickly gave up since the blades easily marred and really did not take a sharp edge ...
The younger style (with the nails in the handle) was finished somewhat better then the older style (with the carved handle) which also had some rather bad scuffmarks on the leather covered scabbard. I was able to repair this without great difficulty.
You would be able to put better blades on the handles if you have some experience with making knives, and you could if you want to do so improve a bit on the handles. I myself will not go that far ... I am happy with them the way they are and will wear them proudly on our pipe band uniform (allthough one at the time .... lol)... For cutting purposes I will continue to put a raser sharp folding knife in my sporran....

Thanks for the feedback! I knew someone had one somewhere, at some point...
As for the fit and finish, I plant to more or less completely re-finish the brass and steel; I'm going to give the blade the benifiet of the doubt, put a full convex grind on it, and see what happens. If its no good, so be it... If I go to the effort to replace the blade, I'll just make a whole new dirk!

I've got several, most of which I've had made myself, and mine tend to be about 7.25" to 7.5".

Still waiting on my dirk. But i thought this was neat; here's an original that may have been the inspiration (or at least the style copied).
They want $2,000, and its USED! I think I got a good deal! ![Laughing](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)
