Thank you sailortats. This is known as the "Cowboys Lament". It does involve a drink in the end.

My brother used to play guitar in a country and western band, although he was brought up on proper rock music. He played such down-on-your-luck music, without question, but got quite tickled at having to play it at a gig for an Optimist Club meeting.

Jack, that is a funny quip about your brother's gig for the Optimist Club. A song still played at many gatherings with sad, even dire lyrics, has one of the loftiest beats known. I don't even have to bring up the link.
We all know it as "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen.
I'd venture you're humming some part of it now.

Well, jiminy, I am now. Gee, thanks. ( I most certainly will NOT do the fandango.)

I cannot listen to this without feeling an irresistible urge to drink several wee drams.

Allen, you`re a man after my own heart. I love the contrast between those two memorable voices.

Although not what I would call a classic beer drinking song, this is another tune that moves me to drink several wee drams.

When Donovan would visit Bobby Whitlock (composed "Bell Bottom Blues" and played piano for "Layla" with Eric Clapton) on his farm near here, their conversations of the 60's music scene would raise many a glass of spirits. The evenings often became "jam sessions."
