Tartan Design Idea (Phase Two I guess)
OK so a few months ago I posted this thread about designing a tartan. I sort of updated it but it seems to have died a natural (in an internet kind of way) death. So I am posting the update in a new thread.
So what I had to start with was the County Armagh tartan, which I realize is a fashion tartan and not really historical but it would do for these purposes.

I knew that I wanted to have a blue based tartan and not a green based tartan so my first adaptation was to change the greens to blues, which gave me this:

This was OK, but seemed rather dull looking to me. It also lacked the black and white that I wanted to include in it. So I added a white stripe to either side of the red stripe and a black stripe in between the gold stripes, giving me this:

That made the thinner stripes far too dominant to my eye, so I wanted to change that. I made the gold and white stripes a bit thinner and I moved the red/white stripes a bit further away from the dark blue. This gave me what I think is a good design worth submitting.

I am open to comments and suggestions, but I think this at least adds the colors I wanted, changes the design a bit but still keeps enough features from the original to work.

All three are very handsome tartans, especially in the more muted tones presented.

Not sure that this design is enhanced by the use of grey, rather than pale blue. I have a strong dislike of grey in tartan. While there are some grey tartans that have a respectable antiquity (a few dating back to before the proscription), but it is frightfully common nowadays, in more ways than one.

Mike

No grey in it, although the lighter blue is a muted color, it is definitely a blue on the tartan design website.

I like the final iteration. Lots of to-the-stripe pleating options, I think.

Mike, I can't think of any grey tartan that can definititely be classed as pre-Prosription , as opposed to prohibition, which is a myth.

Thanks, Peter, for the heads up. I have corrected it.

Mike, at risk of going off topic, I cannot think of one predominately grey tartan that is pre-Proscription.
