I think people have forgotten or never learned to take in the history or beauty of places. I believe that is because today's society wants constant stimulation and to be entertained. I live in Nevada a high desert, but people hear "Nevada" and they think Las Vegas. They never get out and explore the desert and learn to appreciate it. There are ghost towns, The ruins of Fort Churchill along the Pony Express trail, Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada mountains. I believe travelling is a great learning and teaching experience.
