Looking good! I am enjoying making sgians lately, I need to figure out the carving bits on the handle.
What metal did you use for the blade?

This was a forged blade from an old file. A friend made it and it was a knife that my dad was using. He broke the handle a few years ago and I took the blade, reshaped the blade and tang, and added the filework on the spine. I then reused it for this sgian.

Isaac, can you tell us about the handle please? It looks like soap stone.

The handle is whitetail deer antler. It was a very "polished" horn from a large buck (and therefore fairly white). I carved the basket weave and the cap and bolster are poured pewter.

Did you use a dremel for that? It had to stink something awful, worst part of cutting and working antler is the smell.

dremel, pocket knife, files, and chisels... all depending. Stink... yes, but I am used to that smell from working antler, horn, bone and growing up on a farm that used an iron to dehorn cattle.
