    J Higgins Jacket Sizing

My brother is getting married October, and I have been permitted to attend the reception in Highland Dress. I am planning to wear an Argyll jacket with the rental bow tie and vest from the ceremony (I will be the Best Man). I had been, for some time, wishing to acquire an Argyll from J. Higgins, and this was the perfect opportunity. I promptly and gleefully ordered one in size 48R. Shortly after this, I was called by their customer service team and informed that 1.) Their jackets run small and 2.)My waist measurement of 46 inches, plus the ~2 inches of extra bulk from a kilt would require size 52, which measures 48in at the waist.

I understand that they have sold many of these jackets and that they probably know the sizing better than I, but I am wondering if this will result in a jacket which is too large in the critical chest/shoulder region... Could someone with experience with J. Higgins' jackets let me know how the sizing runs and if I'll be OK with a 52? I would greatly appreciate it.

What is your chest measurement and what is your waist measurement?

My chest measurement seems to have crept up to a 49.5. My waist measures 46.5.

A 50 or 52 should fit. Ic it was one of our jackets I would suggest a 52, but I'm not sure how they size. Best to call them with your measurements and get their suggestion on sizing.

Actually, they called me about the measurements and said that a 52 would be a better choice. I was just looking for a sanity check, as it seemed like a lot of compensation for the sizing run. They say that their jackets "tend to run slightly small".

I've heard that they are generally good about size exchanges, so even if it's not initially the perfect fit, I can either exchange it for the right size, or pay a visit to the tailor if it needs only slight adjustments.

Thank you for the insight. I greatly appreciate it.

A couple of years ago I purchased an Argyl jacket from them and used my measured chest measurement to order the jacket. Their customer service agent called me up the next day and recommended one size larger (I had ordered 44, he recommended 46.) I took him at his word and ordered the 46. When it arrived it fit perfectly. That's my two cents worth--I listened to their advice and got a properly fitted garment.

Actually, I received the jacket on Monday... it fits fairly well for an off-the-rack item.
