I know it can be done.
And Jon, if you wanted a sock, all you had to do is ask. As I told you, I am making socks regularly for guys with large calves. Even for Highland Athletes and those guys are huge.
I'm glad you contacted Jamie. The next thing you know you will be ordering your own machine. Then at kilt kamp we can have a mini crank-in. You know, for those empty times at kamp when we are all sitting around with nothing to do.
It is my goal in life to corrupt as many people as possible and get everyone cranking socks.

Thank you, Steve, but Jamie offered and I'm so curious to see what's possible that I said, yes. Wouldn't it be a real hoot to have those machines at kilt kamp? On the other hand, it'd be so distracting I probably wouldn't get a thing done. Well, kilt-wise anyway. I'll keep ya posted on how things go. And thanks again for everything! I really appreciate.
Slàinte,
Jon

Kilt Kamp 2015 .... Part 2: Guess who showed up in the shop in Victoria, with his in-progress contemporary kilt? Now, the $60,000 question...where are the tartan tights?

He does get around, doesn't he? I think he said something about wanting to see Okiwen, but I don't know if he's even home. As far as the Tartan tights go, if he doesn't have them, then they're probably with Harlan, Stephane or even still at Barb's. I intentionally kept myself out of those conversations for fear I'd have to be the next one to wear them. LOL! That'll never happen, tho. Rest assured.
Slàinte,
Jon

Ah dear, Okiwen.
We seek him here, we seek him there, we seek him every little where. I believe he is in some place called South Carolina until October. I drove past his house on Tuesday. Oh boy!
And the tights? The tartan tights? They are still in that hard place, ie under review.

It is a bit like "where is Waldo?" It could be a new game, with the winner earning the tartan tights!

Finally finished my kilt a few minutes ago!
After Kamp I ended up taking out 21/25 pleats. The hip measurement was dead on, my waist had ended up too big. Then I redid the steeking. And redid the hair canvas. Basically, at this point I've all but made this kilt twice!
But it fits perfectly now. The last part is that I have to take my lovely finished kilt and toss it in the tub. I had bleeding issues with my tartan at Kamp, so the hope is that this will force the excess dye out. Wish me luck - hopefully I won't be posting pictures of a pink kilt once this is over!

So glad you're finally done with it, Abby! I'm sorry I don't know what die was used so I can't suggest any mordants to add to your water to fix what's there. All in all tho, I think you've gotten the best education of all of us this summer! Yeah, it's a pain to have to rebuild a tank, but it's so much nicer now that it fits properly. Please post pictures (pink or not, OK?) when you're done. I would've done the soak before I put the hair canvas and stuff back in, but that's just me. I hope you've left the basting in as well.
Thanks for keeping us posted!

It's an interesting situation Jon - the colors are indeed fixed, there was just still excess dye that hadn't rinsed out in their finishing process. Putting the whole piece of fabric in allowed the water to push the excess dye out - the bleeding at Kamp happened because it was a small amount of water and water just wants to spread if it's in small amounts.
The kilt has rinsed clean and will need to dry and have a good final press - then I'll share pics!
I have definitely learned a TON! Now with the additional knowledge of how to alter pleats, how to alter with the buckles & straps and what to do when your tartan bleeds!
Can't wait to start the next one - fabric is already cut and waiting...

Here's the pictorial saga of my afternoon (and yes, I've decided that I earned a beer for surviving the process)
First Rinse:
So. Much. Dye.
Third Rinse:
Pretty much clear at this point
Final Rinse & Wash (aka 5th round):
walking on the kilt to push the water through the fibers...
Initial drying by rolling in towels:
Once it's completely dry, it'll get a final pressing and I'll post pics of it on
