I wouldn't be using "Military Breaks" or any other travel company to go to Spain.
I stopped visiting Spain after being pickpocketed three times in Fuengirola, twice from non-trad kilts with side pockets and once from a sporran. Also got scammed out of a big chunk of my savings with a so-called "low risk" investment fund with the Santander Bank.
To be honest, if the 2008 crash hadn't stranded us here, I would have returned to Britain years ago. With my current property worth less than half of what I paid for it, I have no option but to stay here. I must admit I haven't worn a utility kilt outside of my own community. The Spanish kind of know what a traditional kilt is, but not sure of the reaction to a utility kilt, though they are light and more comfortable to wear over here.

Rarely do you find couple married that long anymore. Luckily I come from a family of long marriages. My parents just celebrated 62 years. And I had a great-great aunt and uncle who celebrated 75 years together. They were so close that when he died on a Monday, she buried him on Wednesday, and died on Thursday. They just could not stand to be apart.
Again, congratulations to you and your wife on sixty years together. May you both have another sixty together.
Tom
Thanks Tom, but it was my 60th birthday not anniversary. My wife is in her 40's so it wouldn't be possible Tom. Thanks for the nice sentiment though.

Sorry to hear about your experience, although I think there must be worse places to be stranded. We were lucky enough to get our money invested in Spanish property out just before the crash, so fully understand where you are coming from. Fortunately for us one property barely got off the ground and the other was very late and the exchange rate was kind to us.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

Fuengirola market is bad news on the pickpocket front. My wife lost her purse there fortunately only once. We were ultra careful after that but they are very good at it. The subsequent visit to the police station was a little tiresome, but I guess they must be pretty fed up with tourists falling prey to the locals. On the plus side I found the few shop keepers I had dealings with very pleasant and helpful and we have been to the area many times.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

Mel,
OOOOOOOPPPPPSSSSSS!!!! So sorry for making you both older than you are. I really did misread the message. Anyway, congratulations on your 60th birthday. I will be reaching that one in less than three years. I hope you and your wife will have many years together of happiness.
Hawk,
You are so correct. I really do need to get a new prescription for my glasses. Already have trifocals; is there a four-focals prescription possible? Thanks for the correction.

I don't know, so far I've gone through t kilts and 3 t shirts today, so hot and humid, I'm wearing 5.11 TDK's at the moment as they are light, but completely soaked through with sweat. I wish it would rain! Anyway, I'm glad you escaped the trap.

That's a real bummer. Although, I don't find it "inevitable". It was an encounter with a wanker probably not related to the kilt at all. Interesting that he knew you and you had never met him. Hopefully it was a one time event.

I'm the only one here who wears a kilt, so most people know me that way, but he's a sort of hired thug.

Sorry to hear what happened. I have just returned from Portugal, Albufeira is quite kilt friendly. It seems the "saio escosèsa" (Scottish skirt) is well known and accepted there. The heat is a killer there, it never rained all week and was 30-35 °C (high 90's °F) but the kilt was a welcome change from the sea of shorts.
I'll post a pic later.
I didn't fancy Spain as some parts are a little too Anglicised now (too many English out there) but can recommend the Algarve as a good destination. Decent apartments there from €185,000 too.
