I have only worn my band kilt so far, but I have gotten the drunk guy begging for a picture with me at a gas station, numerous people (mostly women) telling me how good the kilt looks, and A LOT of the "what's under your kilt?"
The first few time I wore my uniform I made sure I was in complete uniform if I needed to stop and get something at a store; however, now I'm usually in the kilt and tee shirt, sans horse hair sporran. Get a few looks, but no longer care.
People in the U.S. like to find reasons to poke fun at things they don't understand, are different, or are afraid to do themselves. And a lot of "manly" tough guys think bullying or putting other people down makes them look better.
