    The Perth (Australia) Kilt Run

Yesterday I took part in the Perth Kilt Run. There were four entry options available -- 2.5 km "Classic" run, 2.5 km walk, 5 km "Warrior" run or 5 km walk. I did the 5 km walk in 37 mins in my great kilt.

This was the third year Perth, Western Australia, had hosted the kilt run, but the first time I'd participated. Altogether over 300 people donned the kilt and took part. It was great fun. It was a lot more straightforward than I thought it would be. We did four 1.25 km laps around Minawarra Park, at the foot of the Darling Scarp. The weather was perfect for it.

When the run was over, the Mayor of Armadale presented awards for the winners and the best dressed before opening this year's Highland Gathering -- the only such gathering in the Southern Hemisphere, I believe. There were Highland Games, historical re-enactments, piping competitions, etc.

The organisers of the run were hoping to rival their counterparts in Perth, Scotland (1,300 runners) and Perth, Canada (1,750 runners), but unfortunately, we can't draw anywhere near those numbers. I don't know why. With a population of 1.9 million we dwarf the other Perths.

Anyway, one guy complimented me on my kilt and got his daughter to take a photo of us together.

Here's me at the start line.

Here's me on my second lap. My five-year-old niece was shouting, "Run! Run!"

Well done! It looks like it was a good time. As it happens, my wife's cousin John was at the gathering. He sent photos afterwards. He is shown below. I made the kilt and we sent it over for his 50th birthday.

I'm trying to convince a friend to do Tough Mudder in kilts.
