No, No, No, NO! Y'all is already plural. At least in my experience in Virginia and the Carolinas, Y'all is never used for a single individual. "All y'all is a emphatic inclusive, meaning all of you without exception, as in "All y'all can just (expletive deleted).

Well, I'm about as far from being a southerner as you can get - my Dad was Canadian and my Mom grew up in Aroostook County, Maine. I could have sworn that a southerner once told me that y'all was singular and all y'all was plural, but I'm getting to the age when all mis-recollections are possible. Geoff, I bow to your southern-ness!

I've never heard anyone say "all y'all" in Gulf Coast or Central Texas where I've lived for 40 and 3 years respectively. I've ridden thru every state in The South and can not recall ever hearing "all y'all." It's just y'all.

I work at Disneyland and have conversations with people from all over the world every day, and for a while there I was asking everyone what their plural for "you" was.

And I did the same thing here, with a poll:

    http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...ral-you-69973/

Actually I don't ask "what is your plural for 'you'" because that makes it sound like formal grammar and everyone will answer "the plural for 'you' is 'you' of course!"

Since I'm going for how people actually talk (rather than what they know is 'correct' from school) I ask "what if you go into a room and there are three people standing there and you want all three of them to come with you?" I've found this question elicits very few 'you' answers.

Linguists know that self-reportage of speech is usually inaccurate. Even after it's pointed out that they're doing it, people will believe that they're not changing medial 't' to other sounds, or that they're pronouncing 'l' differently at the beginning and end of 'little', or that they're pronouncing 'p' differently at the beginning and end of 'pop'.

Anyhow here's what it looks like here in the USA. I note the "you all" area, and that's the way they say it where I'm from in West Virginia, two separate words, not "y'all".
