Brown always looks more "right" to me, because when I started kiltwearing most of the Day sporrans I saw being worn were brown. The nearly universal wearing of brown sporrans with black shoes struck me early on, as one of the many things that makes Highland Dress stand apart from "Saxon" dress.
Back in the day, you could have any colour you wanted, as long as you wanted brown. Specifically Day sporrans were usually pigskin or deerskin.
