Alternatives to fly plaids
So, as I stood there in front of the CNC lathes at work I thought apon the matter of "Fly Plaids". Then I started to think, what else could be worn in it's place and you just don't want to wear the traditionally tartan plaids but still want something there to add to the outfit. I've been thinking that perhaps a fur pelt or something similar. what are you lots thoughts on the matter?

Perhaps I don't understand where you are going with this but I hardly think a fur pelt would be a substitute for a fly plaid. The fly plaid is meant to be a representation (albeit somewhat poor) of the upper part of the Great Kilt.

true, the post is more on the matter for those who want something different then the traditional fly plaid (not saying there's anything wrong with a plaid though)

I couldn't get the image out of my head of the "full mask" fur stoles worn by fashionable women in the 1930's

I am sorry Charles, but the idea of looking more like a clown than a tartan plaid already does and then thinking of substituting some sort of fur appendage over your shoulder just appalls me. I am not against fur being generally worn as clothing either. I know I am known as an old school kilt traditionalist, but really, let us please try to apply some sort of kilt respect. Trying to re-invent the kilt attire "wheel" is not always successful, or appreciated by other kilt wearers, even modern thinking ones.

I suppose you could adapt an old stole for the purpose, just have it over one shoulder, would need fixing at the shoulder to stop it falling off. food for thought.

Sorry I just can't get the idea of Lady Bracknell (Edith Evans) commenting on this out of my mind.
A stole would look too effeminate, and a larger cape or cloak would either look like Hagar the horrible or Hollywood's idea of a Scottish version of one million years BC.
Why not go for an Inverness cape or a Tabaro from Italy to be a little different.

Why not drape a matching scarf around your shoulders? Or (and I know some traditionalists will have a go at me for this but I personally like it) a matching tartan tie?

Charles ,
I'm not sure if there is an alternative to a " fly plaid " other than perhaps " no fly plaid " . ![Smile](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
I can certainly appreciate your creative thinking as many sporrans are fur , although , I humbly don't think the look of fur translates well to being a " plaid alternative " . I have to admit that I am a bit of traditionalist but I can stray from those thoughts .
Nothing wrong with thinking " outside of the box " , however , I often tell folks .... it's great to think "outside of the box " , although give that a second thought before going "outside of the warehouse ". ![Smile](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
