Sgian Dubh handed down from my girlfriends grandfather
I recently got a bunch of kit from my girlfriends grandfather, sporrans, a jacket, hand knit hose etc. One of the nicest things I was given yesterday is a dress sgian dubh. I've wanted a good one for some time as the stuff that is commercially available seem cheap and are mostly made from composite and are dull. Anyway I could not be happier with it as it was carved by her grandfather and is ebony wood with silver and a smoky quartz on top of all that it is a real knife. Here are a few photos.

Glen..... Great looking Sgian Dubh! Does your girl friend share your interest in classy Highland attire (obviously her Grandfather did), beyond you of course?
Cheers.... Bill

She does enjoy it but I think mostly she likes seeing me in it. Her Grandfather is still with us but he is moving to a retirement residence and is passing on his kit. All of it is of high quality and he kept it in good repair. Pics of the other stuff will show up I am sure.

Very nice Sgian, and it looks in excellent condition. I like the very natural looking cairngorm. Congrats on your good fortune.

I like the topper as well but believe it is a smoky quartz.

Same thing, actually, or was at one time. In the gemstone world, Cairngorm was once a term used to designate the dark yellow to dark brown (smoky) quartz that originated in the Cairngorm Mts. I understand that those deposits were used up years ago. The orange to orange reddish stones often seen on antique or vintage dirks and sgians, referred to as Cairngorms are likely amythest that has been heat treated to change the color.

Thanks for the clarification. This is quite old not sure how old but it has been around for a while.
