It's interesting that the Black Watch of Canada are based in Montreal rather than in British Canada... makes one think of the "auld alliance".

A great example of how the bonnets are worn to suit the soldier and not at all in a "uniform" fashion.

An interesting question indeed and one that reflects the history of Montreal. While today the English (as a mother tongue) population of Montreal is only about 13%, in the 1860's when the regiment was founded, Montreal was 45% English.

To quote the regimental web site:

The Black Watch is the oldest highland regiment in Canada.
Volunteers have served since the regiment's inception in Montreal on January 31st, 1862 as the 5th Battalion, Volunteer Militia Rifles of Canada. The rise of American military strength during the Civil War concerned Canada. The government authorized formation of militia regiments. Each of six Montreal Scottish chieftains responded by raising an infantry company for the 5th Battalion. Eventually, eight companies were raised for border service.

Fully explainable in the context of history and demographics. The Civil War connection is interesting as well.

This video is very interesting, including an interview with Lt Col Bruno Plourde, the first Francophone commander of the Black Watch of Canada
