I did a late night run to the shops, and decided to put on my coat as it is cold here, in the last few hours of the year.
Recently I've put on a coat only because it was raining.
Indoors it is still tee shirt order, though with wool kilts and hose.
Difficult to get anything dry with so much rain and high temperatures so the central heating isn't turning on, so no warm radiators.

"Kilt wear in extreme weather," maybe?
Just a thought
Another thought, how about a test of perceived warmth--try a few kilts in a similar situation with a few subjects and see who felt warmer with which kilt, for as we know, perception is everything.

A good double blind - control study would require three kilts per person; a 16 oz. tank, a PV utility and a poly-wool blend to be worn by the three subjects.
Good luck taking a tank away from anyone with the weather conditions described below.

'Must admit, in the depths of winter in Chicago, particularly with a nasty west or north wind; this writer does not kilt up when being outdoors if any but brief time outside is required.
It was bad enough this morning, walking wee Scottish Terrier, Hamish, for an hour, atop 2 inches of loose snow atop 4 inches of ice...
...in flannel-lined chinos, boots, parka, heated gloves and ex-Soviet Navy shearling hat. Hamish, however, as his three same-breed predecessors, loves this weather and romps gleefully therein.

I have been enjoying a very mild Massachusetts winter so far resulting from a combination of El Nino and climate change. Anyway, I have been wearing my heavy wool Davidson modern kilt and also my new USA Kilts 5-yard Connacht Crest with 9 inch Under Armour boxerjocks, a merino wool baselayer, jacket, hat, mittens, and knee-high wool socks with Carolina Linesman boots. My wife and I walked our dog a few mornings ago and, to my surprise, I felt perfectly fine at 26F!

Jonathan

It's been getting up to the mid-twenties lately, some days as high as 32*. Around 0* for the lows. Been passing on the kilts.
It's supposed to warm up a bit soonish so maybe I'll get a chance to wear the new UT Wool Scottish National outdoors. . .

James, I still remember Great Lakes Naval A school right at the shoreline north of Chicago in 74. The wind only pauses to switch from offshore to onshore and the Navy issue pants just didn't cut it. Three blocks walking outside between buildings and all us young guys were half frozen and shivering.
I am always amazed at how cold tolerant my Pugs paws are to cold also. But I do have to shovel off a bathroom area for her or she will use the porch.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

As mentioned. 18 ounce Wool or greater or leather for the kilt. Heat rises. You're fine.
8F in the wool kilt pic.

Dang cold in the leather kilt pic
