Congratulations to Daniel, and to his father for the encouragement he has obviously given (or the example he has set).

Although I do not have family, I do try to set a good example - by looking my kilted best every time I leave the house!

If you don't feel like wearing the sporran, then don't! There are no rules stating that you should. To feel obliged to wear it indicates, in a way, that you are wearing a costume, not an everyday garment.

As Raphael so rightly points out: I don't wear any of my sporrans unless 1) I am attending an event in full rig (in which case I am, in fact, wearing a costume!), 2) I am going jacket-less and therefore have no pockets in which to keep essentials. In the photo I posted recently of me on duty with The National Trust, I am wearing my blue kilt suit with a sporran, but more often than not I do not wear a sporran with those suits. In everyday situations, sporrans are optional accessories.

I never remember putting on a sporran just for the purpose of 'telling' the world at large than I am wearing a kilt. To do so, to me, seems a nonsense!
