No, I can't say that I have, but then I probably don't venture to where I need a guide these days!

On my first trip to Scotland, in 1986, my wife and I couldn't help noticing that most of the homes we entered (we stayed in people's homes, a different home each night) had photos on the wall of weddings, the men invariably in kilts. I would inquire about it and found that in every case the men didn't own kilts, and had hired them for the event. So I came away with the notion that in Scotland nobody owns kilts but everyone wears them.
I think the Tartan Army has changed this, for what it's worth. And as people have been saying firms in the tourism industry putting their staff in kilts.
About myself, most of my life at any given point I've owned one or maybe two kilts. You can only wear one anyhow! Many pipers, by the way, don't own a kilt and never have- they wear the kilt issued to them by the band they're in at the moment. (In the pipe band world there's a type of piper called a "kilt collector" who joins one band, then quits without turning in his kit, then repeats the process until he has a half-dozen kilts at home. These guys receive unfriendly visits on occasion.)
So two of the kilts I now have are band kilts- one from the band I currently play in, and one from a former band, however I purchased the kilt myself due to the band not having one in my size. (Drummond Of Perth Muted, and Prince Charles Edward Stuart Modern.)
Besides those I have the Isle Of Skye which is the one I primarily wear, and the hella-heavy Royal Stewart kilt I had made for my Black Watch piper's kit.

I would definitely say that I am on the upper end of the ownership scale. Currently at 19. I have two which never leave home as they are only for yard work and lounging. The rest are in regular rotation as I am a daily wearer. Six are solid canvas or soft cotton, three are polyester viscose, two acrylic blends and the remaining nine are wool of various weights and lengths. I also have not found a Scottish bloodline so most of my tartans are "universal"/fashion. I do think I have reached the point where I will need sell one prior to acquisition of another.

I think the original question had to do with Scots in Scotland more than our membership who are by definition far from normative.

I am probably the exception as I own around thirty kilts. Up until a year or two ago I wore kilts every day, then I developed an umbilical hernia which meant I was only able to wear my few non-traditional low waisted kilts so I've worn them less frequently. Now I have had my hernia surgery last week and when the swelling dies down I expect I will be getting into kilts again. I have two neighbours who each own one kilt. My previous next door neighbour owned two kilts but he has now moved away.

I have at the last count 31... I love the various tartans and have diversified into Kilt Suits (jacket, waistcoat and kilt all matching ) for special occasions... due to bad weather of late it's been mostly trousers

Statistics for scottish men who own a personal kilt? Guestimate probably less than 10%, As Jock said, likelihood of a scottish male owning more than one kilt---of those who own one, probably 30%--like Jock. Probably one for day wear and one for dress wear. Again guestimate.
Me--some have come and gone, but I think 17 now, with my go-to's being Forrester Modern, Ancient Red Douglas, Dutch Friendship, IOS, MacDonald of Glencoe muted, Forrester Hunting, Douglas Ancient/Black/Brown/Weathered, ---- well actually whichever one I grab when I reach into the closet.

The OP asked both, as I interpret it:
"How many does the average Scottish own?
Yourself?"
The thread title, to me, also asks both:
"How many kilts do you own? The average Scottish man? "

I own 4 kilts. I wear one to nearly all special occasions and a few lesser/non-occasions when I just feel like dressing nicely.
