I looked it up on what Ancient Colquhoun tartan looked like.. Yes yes. It's fabulous with the fire engine red hose. Way to go.

I told my wife that when I get my Colquhoun (family clan) kilt, fire engine red hose sound good to me, also. I may try to find some with checkered tops if possible. Sometimes it just sh*ts and giggles when kilted.

Yes, I'd love to get some claret and other interesting colors but like you said, they're pretty pricey. I don't get it. I understand the theory that the more common colors sell better, but maybe that's because they've priced the other colors out of budget for a lot of folks, so it's a big circle. Most places I've looked are much more expensive. If I can get a pair of pipe band hose in Lovat green for $22, why can't I get claret or mustard for the same money? If the manufacturers would just give it a chance, it may work. My Scottish ancestry showing now, too, Mike...I can't bring myself to spend 50 bucks on a pair of socks.

Hoses I don't know, but I immediately thought of the obsolete English word hosen
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/hosen
Makes me think a bit, though, if the word "hose" is a count noun or a non-count noun or both... wouldn't you say "two lengths of hose" rather than "two hoses"? (In the sense of "two lengths of tubing" rather than "two tubings".) I guess it depends on the situation.
About Cheviot hose, I wear the same pair all the time, I've had them for a few years, and they're still fine. I don't wear any socks under them, I've never done that with kilt hose. I do make sure I keep my toenails clipped short! Long sharp toenails can punch through hose quickly.
About Pipe Band hose, often called "socks" even though sold by Scottish firms, most of the ones I see marketed to the Pipe Band world are inferior Pakistani-made ones. They wear out very fast! I got holes in the heels of one pair in a single day. I switched them out for my Lochcarron hose I bought in the 1980s which are still fine.
My go-to Cheviot hose (Ancient Blue? St Andrews Blue?)

Claret hose with the same kilt. Note the lovely Cheviot hose on the right.
What I like about wearing red, claret, and blue hose with Isle Of Skye is that those colours do not appear in the tartan.

My fanciest hose, the castellated ones

Worn HOC hose for years with never a problem. Then again I wear them always with sock liners that save on wear and tear that I pick up during the hunting season. Clean them on the wash cycle for wool with Woolite and let them air dry. The liners save on the number of washing, too.

Good to meet another cousin. Last week I wore HOC claret hose with the same kilt. I thought they looked ok too but if I have to be a little more subdued I'll wear lovat green (pretty matchie/matchie though.)
I'm just trying to be the person my dog thinks I am.
