Semi-formal would be with a jacket and tie, usually as day wear.

Most Scots (who actually own a kilt) own one kilt and it is a tank, so my Scot friends tell me. They wear them on appropriate occasions...casual on up....but a bit more formerly than we I believe.
Most kilt wear is weddings or occasions as such except for the 'few' who wear when it suits them and then, as demonstrated here at least, in a more formal manner.
Now some will wear a sport kilt etc., I've a borderer acquaintance here who does, but honestly there is nothing trad about a sport kilt.
You will see that type of kilt at sporting events...rugby etc. with boots/t's etc. and for that situation, as stated before...just fine. Nice to see 'kids' in kilts.

Pat: Acknowledged, and thanks for the additional information. No disagreements here, and I understand that my take on the traditional kilt is somewhat different from the modern norm.

Greetings Mark ,
I will try to offer a little bit of info .
I don't think there really is a " debate " between people on the forum on " what " to wear .
I think the misunderstandings ( or " the rub " ) come into play when people ask for advice in the " general kilt talk section " whereupon they get opinions from everyone - historical , contemporary and traditional .
There is certainly nothing wrong with someone asking for advice in this section as it is the natural place to go if one is not sure where to post .
I myself lean to the traditional side ( been kilted since 1970 as a teenager ) , however , I have no problem with the style one may choose .
If I am asked about " traditional " wear , I will offer advice if I can , other than that , I generally don't say much . However , I have seen several contemporary looks that catch my eye , and I always respond in a positive way .
Although I'm a " traditionalist " , I can be seen wearing a kilt at home with only a t-shirt and socks . ![Smile](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
Even " The Queen " has been seen wearing a head scarf , rain jacket and Wellie boots . ![Very Happy](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

@Downunder Kilt, & MacGumerait, Thanks for the information, and I especially appreciate the background on what goes on in the forum. As an XMTS newbie, I find it helpful to understand what's been happening before I arrived.
Cheers, Mark
