Being (as a colleague of decades describes as) "a pasty-afs white boy"), 360-degree, relatively wide-brimmed hats are the norm all year around.

When it's windy, wear one with a chin strap. When it's cold and windy, wear a wool one with chinstrap and ear flaps. When it's sunny and cool, a fur-felt bush hat. When it's sunny and warm, a canvas one with vents. For warm outside work, a straw Texas Sombrero. All variants serve valiantly in rain.

About the only use here for a Balmoral is after dark.

Thank you for the reaffirming bit on the Glegarry and Balmoral being both military and civilian.

I wear my balmoral-inspired tweed tams (or whatever they might officially be called) as my standard winter hats, and have for probably fifteen years. Most of the winter ones are Harris or Cheviot tweed, lined with polar fleece (which helps around here). I've even considered putting fold-down Elmer (Mac)Fudd earflaps inside a couple - for those days when it's so cold and windy that you don't care how goofy you look.

Unlike Jock's photo, about half of the year our convertible weather looks more like this though.

I've got one of those, but I don't bother bundling up like that!

The only time I wear my Balmoral is when I am serving as the owner of this forum. I wear 3 dandelion leaves over my X Marks Cap Badge.

The guy next to me wears his almost all the time he is outdoors in a kilt.

My other headgear is totally weather dependent.

This was hand stitching a kilt outdoors on a blustery, rainy day.

You're 16yrs old, funk it up and have fun!
Make it your 'thing' I remember my son at 16-17 had a thing for vests, he rocked them!
If you learn to knit, there is a great pattern available on Raverly you can make your own in all the colours you want.
    Enjoy

Thank you dear Lady Grey, for a woman's perspective. We "old guys" can advise young men based on our own youthful (and sometimes unsuccessful) adventures. We will always need the feminine voice in this forum.

Take note Colton. I hope her Ladyship's words assist you.

I'm almost 58 and prefer not to wear a hat as I don't want anyone to think I'm bald.

But, if it's cold enough and I'm outdoors, I will wear a fawn-colored Robert Mackie Balmoral.

So, Laddie, what's wrong with being bald?

    Another frequent wearer

I too wear the Balmoral in civilian clothes when it is cool and windy. I like the look and feel and it often generates a conversation.
