How Snug?

Folks,

I appreciate the input and advice I have had from all to date.

I recently acquired a Montrose Doublet which is marked as being size 42. It fits (just) and feels tight if I flail my arms around. I have read before that a snug fit is what you want - but how snug? I can post a picture later when I get home but would appreciate any thoughts on the matter. It is tight to get the second arm into the second sleeve.

Were it I, I'd ask my marvellous tailor if there were even a half inch somewhere on a seam he could let out and press without it being obvious. What is the material and how old is the jacket? Those would be factors in the situation.

Thank you for your response. It would appear to be quite an old jacket (in very good nick) and is made from velvet. I picked it up for a bargain £32 on Ebay so would not have a problem spending some money on altering it if it was possible to improve my comfort!
