The trouble is that I used to know all this stuff off pat without the need of reference books! This episode has rather pointedly demonstrated that I am out of practice with a subject that was dear to my heart and even more pointedly from a personal viewpoint, that I am the wrong side of seventy. Dammit! Perhaps that oldtimers thing is starting to take hold?

No worries when a catalogue will verify your former training, educated guess or hunch. The "Eureka" sensation is great with tangible proof but refreshing the memory (even with often used information) keeps one sharp.
Personally Sir, I find you sharp as a tack. Note: my compliment is not a prelude to borrowing money.

Jock, it's just that we've learned so much new stuff that the old stuff is getting pushed out of our heads for lack of space.

Jock, when it comes to the perspective, experience and knowledge you've accumulated, 'tis I who is on the wrong side of seventy.

Well, you trio of silver tongued souls are very kind, but sadly there does come a time in one's life when one has to admit publicly what you have known privately for a wee while that one is slowing down, physically and mentally. That does not mean that I, at any time soon, plan to stop!

That's a good question. I know that in The Highlanders Of Scotland (1860s) very few men are wearing them, and they're not in the shapes which became popular in the early 20th century, swords and the like, but rather round, like a miniature plaid brooches or cap badges.

A friend of mine jokes that when he learns something new, he 'loses' part of his prior education. e.g. "Well, there goes second grade math", "There goes part of geometry", etc.

Two things...
First, Jock, you sir are a treasure trove of practical knowledge and are an inspiration to me.
Second, Mikilt... Was this the pin you donned on our last outing? You are amassing quite a wonderful kit!

Nope. Just a pic I saw online. I was curious.

That is very kind of you, thank you. You know, all I am is a chap that has been about a bit and have worn the kilt in almost any circumstance you can think of-----------alright, you comedians out there can stop thinking right now!--------for rather a long time and in truth I really dislike seeing the kilt and attire worn badly and much of that caused through understandable ignorance, nothing more. If I have helped, as have others here, change that just a wee bit, then thats just fine by me. Besides, I do enjoy the banter!
