Top of knee or thereabouts.
Am pleased Anne mentioned long kilts when wet!............sandpaper the backs of your legs off.
I Am pleased that nearly everyone here agrees that top of the knee or Shade higher or lower looks the best.
The Visual rebuttal to the masses comment was spot on as well!.... I too detest long hose & long kilts!.......Look terrible.
Mind, I think a proper length kilt and no socks or short socks looks bl--dy awful as well. If I may say so. :-)
Richard.

Above knee is far more comfortable for me. I've tried kilts below the knee and they just don't feel the same.

The top of the knee. I'm a utility kilt guy, any lower beats up the back of the knee.

It started out much higher, but slipped down by the time the photo was taken. The tartan is very lightweight, and while wool, is slippery.... cant wait to get my 16oz hard tartan.

Hi ! 4 out of my 12 wool kilts are on top of my knees..The other 8 are an inch above my knees . My sister in law brother's wife gave me her long skirt (SHAW) ..Bonnie had to do alterations on it and it came out an inch shorter..Well I loved it so much I had my future ones done that length..I prefer it that way.. Not sure if it matters on a woman, but I wanted to add my 2 cents in on this...On a man it doesn't really matter to me as long as it's not to long or short..Men look terrific in them...Angie

At the risk of upsetting Angela and about 50% of the world's population and as a respectful, un-abashed, long time admirer and studier of the female form, I cannot help but say that after long and careful observation, it does depend almost wholly on the shape of the wearer that influences the length of the hem, for best effect.

I like my kilts just at the top of the knee and not lower. For one I personally think they look better there, and for another reason lower makes the back of the kilt bounce off the back of my knee too much as I walk. My kilt hose sit low enough to show all of my knee, I'd say a good hand width below the center of the knee.

I do top of the knee with my hose around three to four fingers below the knee. The exception is when I wear a great kilt. I like them more to the mid knee. I don't know why, but they just feel right that way.
