My New Kilt Is On Its' Way From Scotland!

I can hardly contain my excitement as I wait for my new kilt. The need to caress the fabric swatch daily over the last few weeks has gone into hyperdrive! Thank you, everyone, who has offered me advice and has shared such great info on this forum which has really helped me. Although I've owned a kilt before and wore it a lot during my Highland Dancing days in my youth, this kilt will be my first Mackintosh tartan kilt which I'm so thrilled about. My dancing days are long gone as I'm disabled now and have been for a long time. Although I appreciate the quality and value of a hand-stiched, eight-yard kilt, I've opted for a five-yard, Lochcarron fabric, 16 oz wool kilt from Balmoral Kilts through Scotweb. Since I'll be sitting in a wheelchair 99% of the time when I'm out and about, it didn't make much economic and practical sense to go for a higher yardage kilt. Summers here in the Great Basin can be really hot and sitting on an additional 9 feet of fabric is probably not a good idea for someone using a wheelchair and the lower waist of the Balmoral 5-yard casual kilt is something that will most likely be more comfortable for me in my situation. I can stand in place briefly and walk a few steps with the aid of a cane but it is slow going and if I were to wear an 8-yard kilt I wouldn't get much swish out of it. Anyways, so those are my reasons for choosing a lower yardage kilt. I was over the moon when I received an e-mail on Thursday saying that the kilt had shipped and it seems that time has slowed way down as I anxiously await my kilt. It's been about twenty years since I last had a kilt that fit me and I am so excited to be joining the ranks of kilt wearers again!

I really like that combination of less yardage, but nice heavy fabric.

I had a band kilt which had the overall appearance of a fully traditional handstitched 8-yard kilt, made of the heavy Strome fabric. It was exceptionally comfortable to wear. I measured the fabric and it had somewhere between 6 and 7 yards in it (I can't remember exactly). The pleats are around 1" wide.

So when I ordered the Isle Of Skye kilt I usually wear now I specified between 6 and7 yards.

I have had the same type of kilt for the past 5 years and truly enjoy it.
