    Thanks for the link kiltboy
Im a bit in love with that pocket on the HN kilt, I'm off to research.
OP please don't get anything cheap if you are going to be working in a forge. Cheap wool can be flammable, protection, protection, protection.

    Mmmmm..... Yeah- NO!
I like one on the apron, but the two hanging down is a bit silly.
    Might have to experiment.

    Might something like this help?

It showed up here in 2012 and was credited to "Techdragon". It's made from firefighting turnout gear ("Nomex", Proban or other trade names...). As I recall the maker noted the fabric was difficult to cut and nearly impossible to sew, but just look at the finished product!

Thanks for the great replies everyone - sorry for my tardy response!

The general consensus seems to be either more modern styles (leather kilts and utilikilts just don't sit right for me personally - even in a workshop environment) or a good apron.
I don't plan to get a cheap n nasty - although I may look at some of the second hand shops near to here that often have kilts..

I do have a leather apron and did plan to wear one when forging, I just wanted to get your opinions on it so this seems to be a solid way forward. Firewelding may be an interesting time, but that remains to be seen.

Safety of course is high on the list - which is another reason as to why I haven't yet splashed out on anything - I don't plan to go up in flames quite yet!

I do like the idea of the WW1 style wrap around apron too, but it's not really the look im going for. And I'll likely make myself a plain leather sporran for use in the shop - fur is too risky for my liking even with an apron.

I will take a look around and see what I can dig out. Thanks again everyone!

What other fabrics can be used to create a lightweight and safe kilt and how much (GBP) might I expect to pay for one - preferably in the (modern) Gordon tartan?

Any assistance would be greatly received

(I would also very likely wear a leather apron too but i just wat to see what the consensus is)
I find that when I am in the forge that a leather apron works the best. You can make one to wear that is a bit longer than your kilt from scrap leather throw in some rivets if you want a steampunk look.
