Well, at the moment, I'm contemplating whether I should go commando or not . . . never gone commando before, even with pants.

Umm, don't. Especially until you're very experienced wearing a kilt. Besides which, they chafe on your personals (yes, I know, there are various products for that but you've got to be kidding - I'm not putting that there) Add to that, the personal... uhh, deposits tend to attract moths when you store the kilt.

The idea of going "regimental" is part of the mystique, but it's not as real or normal in regular civilian wear as we kilties would like folks to think, even though a lot of misguided fellows think they're doing it "right". Wear a dark breachclout; just never admit to it. We have to keep the mystique going somehow. The real kiltwearers aren't as much a part of this overenthusiastic nonsense.

(And now I'll be shot from forty sides from people who honestly think they know what they're talking about.)

Your comment about "deposits" cured me! I had no idea how many guys go commando (if that is the norm) or not-commando. Hope you don't get shot!

Most of the guys who do, do so because they've been sucked in by the mythology. Some of the guys who do, do so because they wish to do so, and a few for various medical reasons. Having said that, it takes a lot of skill to sit properly with a kilt with or without gotchees, so "with" removes one other possibility. The current recommendation from Scotland is generally "with" and certainly hire companies require it. Would you want to hire a kilt that the previous user had worn without?

Yeech! No!!! I wouldn't think of doing it with my band kilt (which belongs to the band). As far as my utility kilts, I wasn't sure.

Like with many other things in life, try not to overthink it. Sometimes I wear undies with my kilts, sometimes not. Father Bill is right on the money about not flying free and loose until you've gotten used to wearing a kilt though. It's mighty easy to show off something you didn't mean to if you're not careful.

Basically what you do is your own affair, but if you insist in going commando, just bear the obvious in mind, having some experiences in the wild.

It brings a whole DIFFERENT LEVEL of personal hygiene with it especially if you are out in the hills and nature calls..

Hidden emergency rations of loo paper anyone?

Have thick skin and just do it. Don't worry about what anyone thinks.

I go either "Buck Naked" or "Free Range" under my kilts. Both are brands of underware from Duluth Trading Company. I can answer truthfully that I go free range under my kilt or that I am buck naked.

It helps that they are comfortable, too.

You just do what you are comfortable doing. When you have more experience, by all means experiment, but don't worry about what is supposedly right or wrong, whatever you do is right for you, no-one should know and you should never admit to anything.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!
