American National Tartan

The tartan I am talking about was designed by Erica Randall of The House Of Edgar for Houston Kilts Of Glasgow an is listed in The Scottish Register of Tartans. The background is two shades of blue with white and red lines.

I quite like Rocky's tartan, and I have a swatch of it at home. I've seen a kilt made out of it and I like it a lot. I'm not sure why folks are all mad about it.

I'd own it if I didn't have the better part of a dozen kilts, already.

Agreed and moved. Not there in the first place because the thread didn't start out as a tartan discussion although it very quickly morphed into that.

It is interesting how similar these three American tartans are: dark background, the pair of red lines on a royal blue band, the single white line. On the tartan above, spread the red lines apart and move the white line in between them, and you've arrived at the tartans below, more or less.

Yes, This is the one I meant. The bit of green always bothered me though. Until this discussion I was not familiar with the American Heritage Tartan.

When dealing with Red, White & Blue as your primary colors you really only have a few options. There are few if any white dominant tartans that are not considered dancers tartans. So that leaves red dominant and blue dominant. So the fact that many end up \looking similar is not unusual. Although I like the USA Bicentennial tartan, and have long considered a kilt in it, I can see how it appears loud. I am not generally a fan of black tartans so I don't look much beyond the main color.

Observational note on this thread, which I purposely waited a while to post. Why is it that the initial question was met with replies about politics being fodder for entertainment or warnings that it was forbidden? The thread did not overtly mention support for a specific candidate. Frankly the candidate the question was about has always been a somewhat larger than life figure, even in his business dealings. Living not too far outside of NYC he has been a local celebrity since well before his foray into television. I have to wonder would the thread have been as polarizing if the question had been about a local businessman or local celebrity?

Yes indeed. But in my opinion those three are much closer to each other than being blue-based. Each has a pair of red lines upon a royal blue band, and a single white line. Two put the white line between the red, the other does not. There's an infinite variety in possible arrangement, size, and number of red and white lines. How did these three all chose the same number and size, and two choose also the same arrangement? Coincidence seems impossible.

It would be an interesting design challenge, making an attractive tartan with just those three colours. As Isle Of Skye uses three different greens, I would use three different blues, as a start. No black, no green, no purple.

Anyhow one of the nicest red/white/blue tartans is Scotland 2000 (it's got those two tiny yellow lines though)
