Based on what I'm reading here, and thank you Barb for the other threads as well, we should be able to determine any sample of fabric weight by:

1944 ...... area ......... 1944 being 54x36 and area being that of the fabric sample
    ____ = ______
Xoz ....... weight ........ Xoz being the unknown and weight being that of the sample

therefore, if I had a 12 inch length of 54 width tartan weighing 3.2 oz

    1944 ...... 635 ........... (1944x 3.2) / 635 = 9.79 or approx. 10oz weight
    _____ = ______
    Xoz ........ 3.2oz

    That same length/width of cloth weighing 5.23oz would be a 16 oz weight: (1944x5.23)/635 = 16.01
which, by common check, a third of a yard (12") weighing about a third of 16oz hardly needs the calculation done as was also for the 10oz example. But, both examples give credence to the formula.

an eight yd 24" kilt, area 24x(36x8))= 6912, should by the formula weigh at least 3.56 lbs to be 16 oz, more given buckles, liner and such ...so the approximately 4lb estimate.

Or you could ask an old kiltie, who would pick it up and say something like...yep, weighs about a 16oz

Yes, thank you that's me conscious. Meanwhile, I have a response from the consignor.

These kilts were selling for between £350 and £399 at one point a few years ago

    Glenisla Kilts

The Glenisla website looks very questionable to me. The are two pages only. The home page is not what one would expect of a reputable kiltmaker. They claim Royal Regiment of Scotland exclusive kiltmaker, but the only labels on Royal Regiment kilts I have found on the web are Argyll label and a MOD label.

If the kilts in question are indeed made from the themed fabric, (With the woven pattern in every other square) you can simply direct the seller to the weaver.

This fabric is owned and woven only by House of Edgar. They list right on their website (Links kindly listed by another member above) that these fabrics are medium weight.

Here is a direct link to these fabrics. http://www.houseofedgar.com/acatalog...ed_Plaids.html
It is very plain from the description "While the larger sett is more appropriate for kilting this is perhaps the better choice for other apparel. "

I have a couple of kilts in 13 oz and they are fine - hold their pleats well and are more comfortable in warm weather but fine in cool weather. Therefore as you did get them for a very good price, if they fit you well be happy and enjoy them.
    Just my two bits worth.

Seller not responding to demand, but provides the kilt as wool 16oz 8 Yard at.
    I have my doubts.

Perhaps the experts can help me here.

    Maybe this will help...

    My size 42 W, 24.5 L 16 oz. 8 yard kilt weighs in at right around 4.25 pounds. My 18 oz. 8 yard 43 W, 25 L kilt weighs about 5 pounds..

Yes, Thank you, the link I had already looked at and my concerns.
But I do not want to argue with the suppliers, I just think it's very unfortunate.

Right, well I would be not disinclined. But I was when I was offered as 1A goods kilt unpacked very disappointed.

At the kilt a buckle was almost entirely demolished, several seams must be sewed along.
The straps look like they have located in the water, are hard and worn, etc.
The other kilt is not to be used before him not Irons. With unhook there is nothing and that has very surprised.
I have a few creases in my woolen kilt I hang it in the shower or a night out and is good.

Here the folds have to be addressed, stitched and ironed and at a 1A Kilt?

OK. I am perhaps a little too sensitive, finally, it is a used Kilt.
But I do not understand how a company product called 1A and then the client sends something like that.
No label, no precise indication, no response to demand for the material, first at least not.

Phew, all here have helped me a lot with advice and calculations thanks.

Unfortunately, a buy in USA or Canada is associated with very high tariff or I would certainly use the services of Kitmacher present here to complete.

The more I thank you for the each of you his knowledge provides.
