    Sorry IMHO that is even worse.....

    Gaiters (what you are talking about are called spats) are not meant to cover boots.
    They are meant to cover the shoe to keep muck from getting into the top of the shoe and going inside.

    This is not worn with the PC., stick with plain black shoes if that is all you have, leave boots and spats to a non formal look.

    Sorry about that. i was also thinking of Victorian era clerical (ecclesiastic) gaiters.

    In my world, gaiters (non-clerical, as I'm not actually a cleric) go with ski boots, black socks go with funerals &/or uniform wear, and white socks are for the gym.

    Summary of footwear at this point: black shoes over blue hose.

    What are "Clerical gaiters"? Could someone post an image, or point to a link (that show the clerical gaiters)?
