Depends what you mean by "spread" There are some versions much more extreme than others. I don't like the ones that only show a narrow slit for the tie either. Extremism in fashion is no more pretty to me than extremism anywhere else.

The spread collar and point collar are two of the most popular collar styles–the former being a little more modern, while the latter leans more classic. While the collar points on these two are exactly the same in length, the the points end up 5” away from one another on the spread whereas they finish much closer, 3″ apart, on the point.

The effect is that the spread collar can visually widen the wearer’s face, while the point collar has been said to make one’s face appear longer (often quoted by Alan Flusser). The spread collar also allows more room for a wider tie knot than the point collar, due to the extra space between the collar points.

I like the point better because of my frame but i like big knots on my tie so either will work just fine.

What we see in the stores today with what they call a spread collar is indeed new. Well within my adult lifespan. I can vividly remember the first time I saw one. I thought it was some custom made fashion art shirt.

If you were to change the viewing angle on the photo slightly, that collar would pretty much resemble the "spread" style (bottom row, 2nd from the left), don't you think? Just imagine tilting the shirt backwards slightly...
