What we see in the stores today with what they call a spread collar is indeed new. Well within my adult lifespan. I can vividly remember the first time I saw one. I thought it was some custom made fashion art shirt.
Here is a comparison of collar shapes.

This collar style from Brooks Bros, does not even show up on the chart.

If you were to change the viewing angle on the photo slightly, that collar would pretty much resemble the "spread" style (bottom row, 2nd from the left), don't you think? Just imagine tilting the shirt backwards slightly...
