Of course he could wear a tie(bow or otherwise) in his tartan. A perfectly obvious, acceptable and traditional way of showing ones Clan when wearing a suit, without looking like a clown.

Well I think the vest and tie ideas are perfect if not kilted, and it's very obvious what Jock thinks!

I'm curious, why not just go down the kilt route, it's the most obvious choice to achieve what he wants?

If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

The first post in this thread may be worth reading.

The waistcoat or cummerbund and tie. Quite elegant and usable for many other occasions.

I think many over here would consider a tartan tie is quite enough with a suit.

True enough over here also, but it has been seen with a very dark suit

Just because its seen, does not necessarilly mean it is in good taste.

Also true, Jock, but (sigh) not all can start out with the variety of clothing we of some years amass in relation to the events we attend. A very dark suit might be the best one could muster; I didn't ask ;) [and it wasn't that noticeable either]

Not unlike my kilted beginnings. I've only gathered up things incrementally, and still have a little ways to go to be "properly" attired. NO, no tartan tie with the kilt

Do you know I have never understood why those who are dressing on a financial shoestring fail to do their research. If there are only a few Pounds/Dollars to spare on clothing then why spend it on the wrong stuff? With a bit of research that same amount of money could be much more wisely spent on more suitable attire.

For example, why spend that hard earned loot on a tartan waistcoat when a tartan tie is all that is needed? Fanciful ideas in purchasing inappropriate attire, ----------I see it often on this website sadly-------is a very costly move.

Someone here not so long ago made a very wise comment that many might want to think about and they were:-
"When money is short one cannot afford to get it wrong". Something for some to ponder on before pursuing those fanciful ideas?
