Cochineal was an important imported dyestuffs used in the dyeing of Tartan yarns from the early 1700s. It was the dye of choice for the wealthy to show their status. In tartan the actual shade of red varied from scarlet to a deep, dull pink. Any shade was valued, the brighter the better and more expensive.
