    The Celtic Croft just announced a Great Kilt Rental package starting at $99 USD. Reach them at www.kilts-n-stuff.com

    The email announcing it starts off "We’ve heard your voice, and taken your request to heart."

    Wow ask and ye shall receive!

    I'm guessing that the huge popularity of Outlander is at least partly responsible. I see a growing Outlander influence at the local Highland Games, getting a large number of people interested in Scottish history, historical costume, the Gaelic language, etc.

    BTW the brooch and sporran seen with that great kilt are anachronistic.

    I would say the whole package is anachronistic, as I have one of their great kilts, and its like no historic garment I have ever seen. But it does a good job of replicating some hollywood costume persons idea of what a great kilt should be......

    Many thanks for all your input, while the Celtic Croft offer is interesting! As I'm the other side of the pond it's of no real help. I'll probably go with my own kilt and yes do a bit of dress up and have fun! Which is what I reckon kilt wearing is all about!

    No reason not to, any article of clothing can be converted to a costume at need. I have a clerical cloak that does a great job doubling for a Dracula cloak when needed. As someone else mentioned, being in the UK you could just order a 4 yard length of double width fabric, go with a 13oz fabric and I'm sure you can find a royal stewert, black watch, or common use tartan for cheap. A short search of scotweb and similar sites in the UK has resulted in 15.00 a yard wool fabric, just wrap in a great kilt manner and you could always sew up a kilt with it later or use it for some other project.

    My thoughts exactly. Buy some tartan you want to make into a contempary kilt and use it for your event before you give it to your kiltmaker, if it isn't yourself.
    The hielan' man he wears the kilt, even when it's snowin';
    He kens na where the wind comes frae, But he kens fine where its goin'.
