Care and maintenance of horse hair sporran

My horse hair sporran tends to get frazzled and wavy, especially before I'm piping for and event, as luck would have it. Do the rabble have any tricks or tips for keeping a horse hair looking neat and straight?

This topic came up a while ago and I think it was Steve Ashton that suggested tail and mane shampoo from a Tack shop.........personally I don't know if that would be the answer but it sounds pretty fair.
