Darn it! I was out of the country and missed this post. I would have killed for a bit of yardage!!!!!

It did go very quickly once word got out. It was bound to happen with something so rare at such a cheap price.

Is Hodden Grey actually grey or brown? Photos play tricks with colours sometimes.

I have only seen it in the wild once and it's brown.

The colour has changed over the past 50 or so years, it is now more purple than it used to be. My c1940-45 London Scottish kilt is a greyer shade.

The fabric I received did indeed have a bit of a purple cast to it.

As I have a kilt in this I passed despite the excellent price. Passed the info on to a friend, not o member here, who bought some.

Colours are difficult to put into words, and dye-batches vary and old things fade etc.

I've seen dozens of London Scottish and Toronto Scottish kilts and tunics over the years, and the colour varies a bit from item to item, but overall the colour is what here in the USA is called "taupe".

The best way perhaps to describe taupe is a colour precisely halfway between brown and grey, in the US meanings of these words.

When shopping for, purchasing, selling, and discussing tweed with British people it quickly became apparent that we use colour-terms differently.

The tweed-colour that's called "taupe" in the USA, midway between brown and grey in our reckoning, I have consistently seen called "brown" in Britain. "Brown" tweed, to us here in the USA, is rather darker and more pure. Oftentimes the same tweed will be called "brown" in Britain and "gray" in the USA.

Yes "taupe" sometimes has a slight purplish-pinkish cast.

The photo I posted above showed two London Scottish kilts made from actual London Scottish Hodden Grey fabric, and the photo (at least on my computer screen) is an accurate representation of the colour.
