Thing is, some of the red tartans when done in "ancient colours" look pretty darn orange.
Not a middle-of-the-road orange, sure, but sometimes more orange than red.

I went to Oregon State University. A few years ago they had a tartan design contest and adopted an official Oregon State University tartan in the school colors of orange and black.
But they licensed the rights to Pendleton Woolen Mills who only makes scarfs in the university tartan.
Neither Pendleton, or the University, would/could give me permission to have enough cloth woven in the university tartan to have a kilt made. Attorneys run the world, all licensing rights...no mercy for the lone kilt guy.
Probably just as well, with the football season the Beavers are having this year I'd be ashamed to wear it.

OSU Tartan
Does anyone know if the Oklahoma State tartan is available commercially anywhere? That looks like a good prospect.
Thanks for all the suggestions, all! I knew this would be the right place to look!
Blessings,

I got mine from Burnetts and Struth, it was a remnant though, only 2 metres, enough for a box pleated kilt, I don't know if it's something they normally have.

There was some discussion about this in 2011 here: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...-tartan-64365/

MacGregor Rob Roy Ancient
So, I contacted the folks at Celtic Croft, and they suggested the MacGregor Rob Roy Ancient tartan.
Online, in some places it looks red, while in others it looks orange. I've ordered a swatch just to see.
