First Kilt advise

I am also a Man of Substance, with a 55 1/2" waist. While I also find that velcro works fine, I recommend if you go with the USAK Casual, ask for kilt belt width loops. I think they look better on us big fellas with a wide belt.

As a Man of Substance I echo this thought also and I recommend getting the Kilt belt as one of your first accessories.

I also say if you are worried about how you'll like it maybe you could consider something very inexpensive via a bid site so you can save your money because I bet you're going to want to upgrade your kilt almost immediately.

Then you'll have one to knock around in while one of these fine kilt makers you see advertising here can make one for you.

When I was going to buy my first kilt I was going for a 16oz wool tank......once I had chosen my kilt maker I took my wife with me to see what she thought about it. With her advice and advice from the kiltmaker my choice was changed to a Martin Mills P/V material. That also reduced the cost considerably, but what was more important was the care and maintenance to keep the kilt looking crisp. It also gave me time to get use to wearing a kilt and to decide if wearing the kilt is really what I thought it would be like. It was just a bit more than a year later that I did order and receive my 16oz wool kilt in the Canadian Maple Leaf tartan. Kilting is fast becoming an addiction to me. and I love wearing BOTH kilts, The P/V and The wool, although I will say I probably wear the wool kilt when I want a bit more dressy appearance.......My advice is to save your money not buying something of less quality. If you do decide to go to a non wool fabric get the best you can and you will have no regrets......Quality usually out performs lesser quality and usually gives much more pleasure for a longer time.....just my opinion

Thanks again everyone for the great advice. I think I have made a decision. I am going to go with USAKILTS casual kilt for my first kilt. In the MacDonald modern tartan.I just need to double check my measurements and sit down with my fiance to order. I can't wait.

I would second the belt. I used to be a man of substance and one of my kilts is getting a little loose. I put it on this morning and sucked my gut in and the kilt dropped to the ground. Luckily I was just in my bedroom. Time for some new stuff.
